Our goal is to create a distinctively packaged brand of fine spirits that reflect the region in which they are produced. Every element, including our label, has purpose. Attention to detail is what sets us apart. Even the name on our bottles reflects our passion.
“Diablo’s Shadow” is a reference to Mt. Diablo, one of the San Francisco Bay area’s most iconic mountains. It’s a mountain steeped in history, myth and lore. This peak has served as a sacred place and home for early Native Americans, a reference point for early mapmakers and explorers, as well as a hideout for moonshiners during prohibition. Our distillery is located on the south side of Mt. Diablo, literally at the base of the canyons used by those moonshiners and bootleggers. On our bottles, the hand drawn brand mark uses gothic fonts and demonic serifs and ligatures to playfully represent the mountain’s myth and lore.
The gold shadowing on the bottle symbolizes the early forty-niners who passed through Mt. Diablo’s shadow on their way from San Francisco to the Sierra Nevadas, during California’s Gold Rush.
On the back, a hand-illustrated map of the Bay Area is printed in reverse. When viewed from the front, the map is magnified for the viewer through the liquid spirits, revealing some unexpected surprises. This map represents Mt. Diablo’s significance in the establishment of Northern California’s property boundaries. At its summit, a marker denotes the intersection of the Diablo Baseline and Meridian. Land boundaries throughout most of Northern California and all of Nevada are based on this geographical point.
The history of this mountain, and its importance to our state and community, make it a natural inspiration for our first line of spirits. Distilled in the shadow of Mt. Diablo, with ingredients grown in the shadow of Mt. Diablo, for people who live in the shadow of Mt. Diablo.
